J. R. Sullivan founded New American Theater in 1972.  It had several addresses over time.  N.A.T. operated at 118 N. Main St. from 1984-85 to 2008,  Bill Gregg followed Sullivan as director after Sullivan left in 1994.

The S. H. Kress and Company building later became New American Theater and in 2012 the Rockford Public Library’s Nordlof Center at 118 N. Main St.
