Garfield not listed in any city directories before 1911 when the first three residents built on the 800 block.

Original owner/occupants were:

William H. Keig and his wife Mrs. Margie S. Keig, 1915-1935.  Will Keig died 9/16/1936 in Rockford. His wife continued to live in and own the home until her death 4/21/1946.

Mr. Keig was the owner of Keig-Stevens Baking Co., and also held additional jobs some years, as Treasurer of Forest City Life Insurance Co., and V-Pres. of Rockford Metal Specialty Co.

1947 Webb C. Stevens, jr. and his wife, Sara L. became the second owners of the home at 602 Garfield Ave.  Mr. Stevens was the manager of Stevens Manufacturing Co.

On the second floor there is what was once known as a “Sleeping Porch” with screen windows on all sides to catch the breeze (at the top of a hill) for cooler sleeping temperatures in the summer months.

The house was built in 1914, but vacant. First residents are listed in the 1915 Rockford City Directory.
