“Pistol Duel is Fought Between Girl and Robber; Broad Daylight Bandit Escapes with Cash from Register”

“Mrs. Elizabeth Rotello was seated in the kitchen of her husband’s restaurant at 715 West State St. at 9 o’clock this morning, peeling apples.  The front door opened and a tall, well-dressed man entered. Mrs. Rotello stated out to wait on him. She was startled by the command, “Hands Up!”

“The stranger walked to the cash register and pressed a key. He pulled a black mask over his eyes and began stuffing bills and change into his pocket with one hand, keeping Mrs. Rotello covered with a revolver in the other.”

“Mrs. Rotello backed toward the kitchen. The robber started toward her. Reaching the door she turned and fled. The robber fired at her. Mrs. Rotello grabbed a .22 caliber revolver from a shelf near the kitchen door, as she passed and ran into a vacant lot.”

“When the robber left the rear door she fired point blank at him. Whether or not he was hit is not known.”

Mrs. Rotello fled to the Joe McLaughlin Barber shop next door, where she fainted.”
