WWII Army Air Forces Sanden, Staff Sgt. James

Mrs. Harriett E. Sanden, 2833 Hanson St., will be presented the air medal this morning for her son, Staff Sgt. James F. Sanden who was declared missing in action after he failed to return to his base in Italy on a bombing mission in Germany two weeks ago, 19 year old Liberator gunner will be awarded the medal for the mission since it was completed before he was lost. the sergeant and his twin brother John, Jr. were graduated from East High School in 1943. In Dec., 1943 James joined the Air Force left the U.S.  Sept 9, 1944, won presidential citation within 6 weeks he was lost on his 12th mission with the 15th Air Force in the Mediterranean, Oct. 13, 1944. photo; posthumous Air Medal for meritorious achievement. Killed in Italy Nov. 11, 1944

French, Chellis F., Jr.

Born Oct. 23, 1914 in Rockford, IL, to Chellis F. French, Sr and Elizabeth Parks Andrews.

He lived in Yokohama, Japan for several years as a boy.

Graduated from Rockford High School in 1933, and from Dartmouth College in 1937.

Married in 1941.

Joined the Air Force in 1942 and served during WWII as part of the Seventh Statistical Control Unit attached to the Western Flying Training Command.

Died Nov. 25, 2014.
