U.S. Ninth Air Force Bomber Base 17th mission, brought plane back to England Havoc light bomber “shoe box” awarded Distinguished Flying Cross

18, pharmacist’s mate, third class who is serving in New Guinea “Flying Cross to Navy Hero” a 20-year old Navy flier, veteran of 11 missions awarded distinguished flying cross awarded for heroism in aerial sorties against the enemy. Aviation radioman first class who served aboard an observation plane attached to the light cruiser USS Boise. Healy, who had his legs broken during his service in the Mediterranean, received a citation. The Rockford flier was shot down on a mission over Sicily. Enlisting when he was 18 in June, 1941, Healy received his baptism by fire early in 1942, Malta.

Robert C. “Bob” Allen, 97, of Rockford, died June 8, 2014 in Rockford Memorial Hospital.
Born Dec. 31, 1916, in Darlington, Wisconsin, the son of John G. and Eleanor C. Allen.
1936 graduate of Beloit High School.
U.S. Army Air Force for 4 years. He completed 35 missions with the Eighth AAF Bomber Station in England as a B-17 co-pilot and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross.
