Mike and Sandi Uram toast making a difference after father and husband Chuck Uram was announced winner of the Excalibur Award. Uram raised as much as $6 million over three decades for charitable causes. Dr. David McCarty, 2003 Excalibur winner, called Uram “a silent hero….”
McCarty shared last year’s honor with wife Christine for the couple’s work as foster parents to over 100 children in 30 years.
The 26th Annual Excelsior Award for outstanding work by an organization went to Lifescape Community Services , a group for which Uram raised $2.3 million for expansion of its offices and kitchen.

Born May 19, 1923, in Brooklyn, NY, to John P. and Theresa (McDonagh) McHugh.
Married in Belvidere, IL., 1949.
Graduated St. Michael’s High School in Brooklyn, NY, in 1942.
Attended St. John’s University until 1943.
John joined the U.S. Navy V-12 program and was sent to Holy Cross College in Worchester, Mass. in 1944, and then was sent to St. Albans Naval Hospital in New York as a Navy corpsman for 6 months.
John attended the University of Illinois Medical School in Chicago, from January, 1945 to June 1948.
Completed internship at St. Francis Hospital in Evanston, IL.
Following his internship, John served a year at St. Albans Naval Hospital in Pulmonary Medicine as a Lt. Junior Grade Officer (Medical Corps).
John was a General Practitioner/Family Medicine Physician in Rockford from 1950 – 1984.
He then became Vice-President of Medical Affairs at Rockford Memorial Hospital for six years.
1992 Excalibur Award winner.
6 Children, 11 grandchildren at time of death.
Died Dec. 6, 2014.
