WWII – Navy Hanford, Sherwood

23 year old Rockford sailor aboard submarine Trout listed by Navy as lost in Action, MIA since March 31, famous for trip to carry out vast amounts of gold from treasury of Philippine Government. Enlisted in navy Jan. 1942; boot camp at New London, Connecticut.

“Report Young Rockford Sailor Lost on Sub” navy reported overdue from patrol and presumed lost has been MIA since March 31 in the Southwest Pacific submarine was first undersea vessel to receive personal citation from  President Roosevelt.  Hanford, last home on leave October 1943

“Missing Youth Reported Dead” parents Mr. and Mrs. Duerwood J. Hanford, 1129 6th Ave. have been notified that their 24-year old son, Sherwood Hanford , motor machinist’s mate, third class, is presumed to have died in action while serving on the submarine USS Trout. The youth had been reported missing since April 7, 1944, after the Trout sailed from Midway Island for patrol duty in the China sea. Previously it had carried gold from the Philippines before capture of the island. Entered navy February 1942, Great Lakes, volunteered for submarine duty, trained at New London, Connecticut, then assigned to the Trout. Born in Rockford Dec 18, 1920, Hanford attended Lincoln Park Grade School, then Central High School.
