Gustafson, Carl A. ‘Cully’
Belvidere—–
Born Feb. 22, 1924, in Rockford, son of John and Freida (Swenson) Gustafson.
Served in the U.S. Navy during WWII from 1943 to 1946.
On the USS ATR-36, Carl’s ship spent 11 weeks at Pearl Harbor and recovered hundreds of torpedoes.
Carl also assisted in the Okinawa Invasion group in the Philippine Islands.
The ship was set to sail for Korea but encountered a violent typhoon that lasted 29 hours.
Employed by Greenlee Company, Sjostrom and Sons and Scandroli Construction.
Later he formed his own company, C.A. Gustafson and Sons.
Died July 17, 2014.
Fitzgerald Funeral Home and Crematory; private burial at Calvary Cemetery.
