Gene Alan Viel passed away on March 9, 2015, in Venice, FL.

Born May 8, 1948, in Freeport, IL and lived in Rockford, IL and Bloomington, IN before retiring to Venice, FL.

Gene graduated Winnebago High School in 1966 and attended Rock Valley College.

He served his country in the U.S. Army from 1967 to 1970 in Vietnam and Germany.

He retired from Great West Casualty Co.

Born June 7, 1925, in rural Winnebago, Westfield Corners, the son of Hugh Z. and Lucinda (Bridgeland) Smith.

Graduated from Winnebago High School, Class of 1942.

Veteran of the U.S. Air Force, serving on Guam Island.

Graduated from the School of Pharmacy at University of Wisconsin, Madison.

He worked for Parkside Rexall, Lenz Pharmacy and Cub Pharmacy.

Member of Bethany Presbyterian Church.

Member of Loves Park Rotary Club, Friends of the library.

Died Nov. 8, 2014, in Rockford Memorial Hospital.

Coots, E. Gene

E. Gene Coots, born January 23, 1934, in Burritt Township, the son of Carroll E. and C. Janette (Gale) Coots.

Attended Winnebago High School and then enlisted with the U.S. Marine Corps, serving from July 16, 1951 to July 16, 1954, achieving the rank of staff sergeant during the Korean War.

For over 30 years, Gene was a Winnebago County Sheriff’s deputy, achieving the rank of captain.

Died June 4, 2014, in River Bluff Nursing Home, Rockford.
